Case Study 3

Lily is 4 years old, and lives with her mum, dad and 2 older sisters in a privately owned house in the countryside. Her dad works full time at a well-paid job in the city, and her mum stays at home to care for her. Lily was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and a severe learning disability after she contracted meningitis as a very young baby. Because of her cerebral palsy, Lily has hypotonia, which affects her muscle tone, and this means that she cannot walk, talk, or take food or water orally. Lily is fed through a tube into her stomach, and needs a wheelchair for mobility. Her parents, whilst living comfortably on Lily’s dad’s salary, cannot afford major adaptations needed in their home, so Lily’s dad has to carry her upstairs to bed each night. She has been attending a local nursery and will be starting at school next year, and her parents hope she will get a place at the special school that is nearby. Lily’s mum has become very stressed out about the thought of Lily moving from the nursery to primary school, and worries that her needs will not be met at school; her wheelchair can be uncomfortable if the straps are not fastened correctly, she communicates by looking at things she wants and becomes upset and frustrated if she is not understood, and she cries when she is left with strangers. The nursery staffs has noticed that Lily’s mum is reluctant to take Lily home at the end of the day, and will joke about her being better off living at the nursery. With Lily’s dad commuting for long periods of time each day, Lily’s mum has confided that she feels isolated and thinks she is a bad mum.
