A. Identification of Community Darke County is one of the 88 counties in the State of Ohio. It is the forty-sixth most populous county with its residents accounting for 0.5% of Ohio’s total population. It is in the western portion of the state and borders Indiana. The county seat is the city of Greenville, which is known for having the largest wooden fort ever constructed. The county was established in 1809 and named for General William Darke who was an officer in the Revolution. A well- known markswoman, Annie Oakley, was born in Darke County. The county consists of 600 square miles, of which 1.7 square miles is water. This makes the county the seventh largest in Ohio. There are 20 townships, 21 municipalities and 1,292 miles of roads in the county. Darke County is the home to the well-known fastest half-mile dirt track Eldora Speedway. The county is the largest producer of corn and soybeans in the state and leads the nation in egg production. There are 1,780 farms, with the average farm size of 198 acres and a total land in farm acres of 353,000. Darke county ranks second in the state for agriculture. B1. Population Economic Status The county is considered to be 66% rural and has a population of 52,376 as of 2013. Those individuals that are over the age of 65 make up 18.1% of the population and females are a little over half with 50.8%. The median age is 40 years old with 87% having graduated from high school and 11.9% obtaining college degrees. Blue-collar workers make up 44.5% and white-collar workers fill in the rest of the 55.5% of the people. The median household income is $43,425 with 62.9% of the people active in the work force and 12.6% considered to be living in poverty. Almost a quarter of the children are living in poverty. One-half of all the African American people living in the county are under the poverty level, while only 13.2% of the white race is considered impoverished. According to the records, 90% have some sort of health care coverage. 70% of the health care coverage is employer based, 15% Medicare, 14% Medicaid, 2.7% has military coverage, and 1.3 is some other sort of government assistance.
