In fact, in less than a decade the proportion of aging population will outnumber children aged 14 and younger for the first time ever, and account for close to half of the growth of the overall Canadian population in the next four decades (Statistics Canada, 2012).

With the unprecedented increase of globally geriatric population, there will be a great number of older adults living with chronic diseases and requiring a wider range of health services such as rehabilitation, chronic and palliative care which impose a large burden on the healthcare workforce, particularly nurses.
